OpenAI Turns ChatGPT Into a Full Chrome Assistant With Tab Access
OpenAI's updated Chrome extension lets ChatGPT read open tabs, summarize content, and use Computer Use in Work mode to fill forms and compare products. All plans get it.

Why it matters
- OpenAI's updated Chrome extension lets ChatGPT access open browser tabs and summarize their content.
- In Work mode, ChatGPT uses "Computer Use" to fill out forms and compare products across several tabs.
- The capability is open to all ChatGPT plans, including free tiers, per The Decoder.
OpenAI's updated ChatGPT extension for Chrome can now read a user's open browser tabs, summarize their content, and act on them, turning the chatbot into a full browser assistant rather than a sidebar conversation partner.
The update, reported by The Decoder, gives ChatGPT direct access to the pages a user already has open. The assistant can pull information from those tabs and condense it. The change applies to the extension that runs inside Google's Chrome browser, the world's most widely used browser and the distribution channel through which OpenAI can reach users on any website they visit.
OpenAI has made the capability available to all ChatGPT plans, according to the report. That means users on free tiers, not only paying subscribers, can run the tab-reading assistant.
What can ChatGPT actually do inside the browser?
The extension performs two distinct classes of work:
- Reading and summarizing. ChatGPT can access open tabs and produce summaries of their content, letting users query material they are already viewing without copying text into a separate window.
- Acting. In Work mode, the assistant uses OpenAI's "Computer Use" capability to operate the browser directly. The Decoder lists filling out forms and comparing products across several tabs as concrete use cases.
The second class marks the shift. Reading tabs makes ChatGPT a faster research tool. Acting on them makes it an agent that executes tasks on the user's behalf, the direction OpenAI has pushed its consumer product throughout the year.
Why does tab access matter?
Browser extensions sit closer to the user than any website can. An assistant that sees open tabs observes the full context of what a person is working on: the articles, the shopping comparisons, the half-completed forms. That context is what chatbots in separate windows lack.
For OpenAI, the move extends ChatGPT from a destination users visit into infrastructure that runs alongside everything else they do online. For Google, it deepens a practical dependence of Chrome users on a rival's assistant.
The capability also raises the stakes around permission and privacy. An extension that reads open tabs and can control them handles a wide span of personal data and actions. OpenAI has positioned Work mode as the container for the acting capabilities, which gives users a defined mode in which the assistant takes over browser operations.
Who gets it?
All ChatGPT plans, free and paid, The Decoder reports. OpenAI has not gated the browser assistant behind its subscription tiers, a choice that maximizes reach for the agent capabilities as competition among browser-integrated AI assistants intensifies.
What comes next?
The report frames form-filling and cross-tab product comparison as the current uses of Computer Use in Work mode. Those tasks suggest the near-term trajectory: ChatGPT moving from answering questions about pages to completing multi-step work inside them.
